We have attempted to give you, to the best of our ability, the general details and procedures about obtaining residency and citizenship in this tropical paradise. General Procedures:

First of all, obtaining citizenship is a three or four step procedure. First, the foreign applicant must obtain provisional residence status; then, after a year as a provisional resident, he may apply for permanent residence status which leads to citizenship and a second foreign passport.

Requirements for residency are easily met by anybody in good health and with a clean police record. The time involved is usually four to five months for the provisional residency to be approved after the first vacation to the island during which time the client goes through a physical examination and submits some paperwork through the law firm to immigration. After about five months the applicant returns and gets his provisional cedula card and residence card and then he or she waits for one year.

Then the client returns to the island and goes through the picture taking and the physical examination tests again and some documentation is submitted to the immigration department, then the client returns home and waits for permanent residency to be approved after which time the law firm sends the client his/her permanent residence card by fedex. Then another period of time must elapse before citizenship can be applied for. After obtaining citizenship, application for the passport is made by the client.

Because of the deficiencies of this country's consular services abroad, applying from outside this sovereign nation is not practical but it is recommended that you get your original birth certificate verified by a consulate of this country before coming for the first step in order to save time. If you do not, it can be done by the lawyer, but will require more time and an extra $100 for fedex and handling.

Again, the applicant does not have to stay in this country during the residency process, he would only need to travel down there on vacation in order to go through the immigration department and the government clinic for medical tests, consisting of a blood sample, a urine sample and chest x-rays, and also to get several pictures taken before processing the immigration documentation. The second time to pick up the temporary residence card, and the third time to do the same process as in the first step so that permanent residency is obtained.

All residency applications are done through the capital city office since the immigration authorities are based here. The application process takes only several hours. You should arrange to meet the attorney in the capital city and with the things the attorney asks you to bring. They will receive your documents and take you to the immigration department and the government clinic for your medical tests. They will take you for your pictures also. Usually, the process will be over by early afternoon.

How to Coincide the Steps with a Vacation:

I recommend that you go during the first week of November for the first step and vacation at the end of February for two weeks for the second step so that you can take in the various activities going on in this country during the two best times of the year to vacation there. Complete details of the exciting things you can do and events you can see will be given to you in your package after you pay the intro. fee. But I do not recommend waiting too long to start this. Anytime of the year is o.k. to go to the D.R. provided it is not during hurricane season.

The third step is basically a repeat of everything you did in the D.R. during your first step. You can spend a day only in the D.R. if you want to or you can make it into a mini-holiday or a longer vacation. The choice is yours.

Then you return home and wait a number of months for the permanent residency card to arrive via fedex and for the fourth step you wait a number of months to vacation again and do the citizenship process which is necessary to obtain a second passport. You can go back there during an ideal vacation time for you.

What to Bring for the Passport Program:

1. A passport for each individual applying from their country of citizenship 2. Original birth certificate (preferably verified by a consulate beforehand) 3. Original marriage certificate if the spouses are applying together 4. A clean police report when you go back the second time (if possible but not often required)

We provide for you the rest of the required documents. It should be noted that all documents filed with the application will become part of the government file and will not be returned to the applicant. You will get back your original birth certificate only if you do not pursue citizenship.

Attention:

A foreign national who has lived in this country as a permanent resident for two years or in certain cases, six months, may apply for citizenship (naturalization). Naturalization is not automatic but granted at the discretion of the government. But if there are no past criminal issues it has always been granted in the past.

There is a fast track residence program for retirees. You can get residency in 45 days from the time the provisional documents are filed. This is great for the person in a hurry. Fees and expenses for the residency process are as follows: $1,000 for provisional residency, $1099 for permanent residency, $1299 for citizenship.
